Pre-Kindergarten

The pre-kindergarten student explores the world around them and begins to develop an understanding of self and others and what it means to belong and interact within a group. Students interact with various forms of text and begin to play with letter formation beginning with the letters in their own names. They develop an understanding of numbers and shapes.

English Language Arts
A pre-kindergarten student in Monomoy gains an understanding about the basic functions of print through interactions with books, and other printed materials. Using their personal experiences, students begin to interact with literary and informational texts. Students build upon their emergent writing skills in order to use writing functionally in their own life, beginning with the letters in their own name. It is the expectation that by the end of the year, Monomoy preschoolers will be able to follow two-step directions, be active listeners, and participate in conversations using appropriate conversational language.

Social Studies
At the preschool and kindergarten level, learning in history and social science is built on children’s experiences in their families, school, community, state, and country. Children listen to stories about the people and events we celebrate in our national holidays and learn why we celebrate them. They also become familiar with our national symbols. The purpose of the preK-K curriculum is to begin the development of their civic identity. Discovery of self and other are the essential themes of kindergarten. Students begin their studies of societies and groups by learning and practicing ways to describe themselves and the people they know best.

Mathematics
In pre-kindergarten, the focus is on two areas: (1) developing an understanding of whole numbers to 10, including one-to-one correspondence, counting, cardinality, and comparison; and (2) recognizing two-dimensional shapes, describing spatial relationships, and sorting and classifying objects by one or more attributes.

Science and Technology/Engineering
The World Around Me - Pre-K students focus on experiencing and making observations of the world around them. They are beginning to learn about their own environment as they observe plants and animals, the moon and the sun, and the daily weather. They experience their world through their senses and body parts and begin to recognize that animals also use their senses and body parts to meet their basic needs. They are given opportunities in their play to investigate pitch and volume, shadow and light, liquids and solids, and how things move. They sort materials by simple observable properties such as texture and color. They share their understanding of these concepts through discussion as they develop their language and quantitative skills. Pre-K students build awareness of the wide variety of natural phenomena and processes in the world around them.
